How to Buy Pet Medications Online Without Getting Ripped Off
I buy my dog's flea and tick medication online every few months. It saves me about half of what the vet charges for the exact same box. But there are things you should check before you hand over your credit card, because not every website selling pet meds is legit. Some sell counterfeits. Some sell expired stock with the date codes scratched off. Here is how to tell the difference.
Why online prices are so much lower
Vet clinics mark up medications 100-200%. This is not a secret and it is not necessarily greedy. A clinic has overhead: rent, staff, equipment, insurance. The markup on meds helps cover the stuff that does not pay for itself, like the surgery suite or the ultrasound machine. When you buy from your vet, you are paying for convenience and the relationship.
Online pharmacies have lower overhead. They operate out of warehouses, buy in bulk, and run on thinner margins. A box of Frontline Plus that costs $60 at the vet might be $35-40 online. For a multi-pet household buying year-round prevention, the difference adds up to hundreds of dollars.
The products are the same: same manufacturer, same lot numbers, same packaging. The price difference is about distribution, not quality.
How to check if an online pharmacy is legitimate
You want to see these things before you order. If any are missing, find another seller.
✓ A physical address and phone number listed on the site. Not just a contact form. Call the number. If someone answers who knows what they are talking about, that is a good sign.
✓ Requires a prescription for prescription products. A site that sells prescription heartworm meds without asking for a vet prescription is operating illegally. Over-the-counter preventatives (Frontline, Advantage, K9 Advantix) do not require a prescription, so this does not apply to those.
✓ Accreditation or licensing. In the US, look for Vet-VIPPS accreditation from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. In Canada, look for CIPA certification. In Australia, check the AHPRA register. International pharmacies may carry different credentials.
✓ Clear return and refund policy. If it is vague or missing entirely, walk away.
✓ Original manufacturer packaging. Products should arrive in sealed boxes with lot numbers and expiration dates visible. If you get loose tubes in a ziplock bag, something is wrong.
Red flags that mean do not order
✗ Prices that are 80-90% below retail. Nobody is selling genuine Frontline for $5 a dose.
✗ No physical address anywhere on the site.
✗ Sells prescription drugs without asking for a prescription.
✗ The packaging looks off. Blurry printing, misspelled brand names, different colors than usual. Counterfeit pet meds are a real problem, especially for popular products like Frontline and Heartgard.
✗ Only accepts cryptocurrency or wire transfers. Legitimate businesses take credit cards.

How to verify your order is genuine when it arrives
Open the box and check:
1. The packaging should match what you see at the vet or on the manufacturer's website. Same colors, same logo placement, same font.
2. The lot number and expiration date should be printed clearly, not on a sticker placed over something else.
3. The individual applicators should be sealed. The liquid inside should be clear (most products) and the tube should feel full.
4. Many manufacturers have lot number lookup tools on their websites. Merial (Frontline) and Zoetis (Revolution) both offer this.
If anything seems off, contact the pharmacy. The legitimate ones will replace questionable product because their reputation depends on it.
Shipping times: set expectations
Canadian pharmacies shipping to the US typically take 7-14 business days. International orders outside North America can take 14-28 days. If you are about to run out, order early. These are not Amazon Prime speeds, and customs can add unpredictable delays.
I order when I have one dose left. That gives enough buffer for the slowest realistic delivery time without leaving my dog unprotected.
