Complete Guide to Flea Prevention for Dogs
Everything you need to know about keeping your dog flea-free. How fleas live, which treatments work, and how to choose the right product.
The Flea Life Cycle
Fleas have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult fleas live on your dog and lay eggs that fall into carpets, bedding, and soil. These eggs hatch into larvae, spin cocoons (pupae), and emerge as adults — restarting the cycle in as little as 14 days. Breaking this cycle requires treatment that kills adult fleas and prevents eggs from hatching.
Topical vs. Oral Flea Treatments
Topical (spot-on) — Applied to the skin between the shoulder blades. Absorbed into the oil glands and released over 30 days. Examples: Frontline Plus, Revolution, Advantage. Best for dogs that tolerate handling.
Oral (chewable) — A flavored tablet given monthly. Kills fleas through the bloodstream. Examples: Nexgard, Bravecto. Best for dogs that swim frequently or hate topical application.
