Summer is peak season for fleas and ticks. Warmer temperatures accelerate the flea life cycle, and ticks are most active between April and October. Here's everything you need to protect your dog this summer.
Why Summer Is High Risk
Fleas thrive in temperatures between 70-85°F with 70-80% humidity — exactly the conditions found across most of the US from June through September. In these conditions, the flea life cycle can complete in as little as 14 days, compared to 4-6 weeks in cooler weather. Ticks are most active when temperatures exceed 45°F. One female flea can lay 50 eggs per day — an infestation can explode within weeks if your dog isn't protected.
Summer Protection Strategy
1. Monthly Prevention
Apply or administer flea/tick treatment year-round, but never skip a dose during summer. Set a recurring calendar reminder.
2. Environmental Control
Vacuum carpets weekly. Wash pet bedding in hot water. Keep grass mowed short. Remove leaf litter where ticks hide.
3. Post-Walk Checks
After walks in wooded or grassy areas, check your dog for ticks — especially ears, neck, between toes, and under the tail.
