Interceptor (milbemycin oxime) is a monthly oral chewable made by Elanco. It prevents heartworm disease and treats three types of intestinal worms: roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm. Unlike broad-spectrum products that include flea and tick coverage, Interceptor focuses on internal parasites only. Most owners pair it with a separate flea and tick preventative for complete coverage.
Safe for dogs and puppies 4 weeks and older, weighing at least 2 lbs. Beef-flavored chewable that most dogs eat like a treat.
Dosage by Weight
| Dog Weight | Strength | Doses/Pack |
|---|---|---|
| 2 - 10 lbs | 2.3 mg | 6 |
| 10.1 - 25 lbs | 5.75 mg | 6 |
| 25.1 - 50 lbs | 11.5 mg | 6 |
| 50.1 - 100 lbs | 23 mg | 6 |
For dogs over 100 lbs, combine two doses. Give once monthly with food.
What It Covers vs. What It Doesn't
Interceptor handles the worm side of parasite prevention well. The three intestinal worms it targets (roundworm, hookworm, whipworm) are the most common ones dogs pick up from soil, other dogs, and prey. But it does not cover tapeworm โ for that you need Interceptor Plus or a separate praziquantel product.
It also does not touch fleas or ticks. This is by design. If you want an all-in-one worm and flea product, Revolution or Advantage Multi are the alternatives. If you prefer to pick your worm and flea products separately, Interceptor + Frontline Plus is a common pairing that covers everything.
Safety
Milbemycin oxime has been used safely for decades and is well tolerated at the labeled dose across all breeds, including Collies and other MDR1-sensitive herding dogs. Side effects are uncommon and usually mild: occasional vomiting or lethargy after the first dose, typically resolving within a day. Heartworm testing before starting is recommended โ giving prevention to a dog with active heartworm can cause complications.
