Revolution (selamectin) is a monthly spot-on made by Zoetis. Selamectin is a semi-synthetic avermectin that targets the parasite nervous system at receptor sites mammals do not have. A single dose prevents heartworm disease, kills adult fleas and stops eggs from hatching, treats ear mites, and controls sarcoptic mange. It also kills the American dog tick, though it does not cover other tick species.
Safe for dogs 6 weeks and older. Applied to the skin at the base of the skull once monthly. Absorbs within 2 hours.

Revolution is the right pick when your dog needs multiple types of protection and you want to minimize the number of products. It is especially useful for:
- Dogs with ear mite problems — one of the few preventatives that treats mites
- Dogs with a history of mange — selamectin is a first-line treatment

Side Effects
Temporary hair loss or clumping at the application site happens in about 1% of dogs and resolves on its own. Systemic reactions are rare at the labeled dose. Selamectin has a wider safety margin than older avermectins, which is why vets commonly prescribe it for herding breeds. Heartworm testing before starting is recommended for any dog not currently on prevention.
